Pregnancy is a joyful time for many people, but it is also definitely a difficult thing to go through, since about 60% of pregnant women experience pains during pregnancy. When you’re feeling sore and want to relax, some time in a hot tub might sound like a good idea to relieve aches and tension, but this may not be a good idea.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advises to stay away from hot tubs, since elevated body temperature can be dangerous. While taking a quick dip might not cause issues, an extended stay — especially in your first trimester — can lead to neural tube defects and an increased risk of miscarriage.
If you want to go into the hot tub during your pregnancy, the American Pregnancy Association recommends limiting your time to 10 minutes, lowering the temperature beforehand, and getting out if you feel discomfort. You may be better off relieving pain by trying a belly support band, a hot bath or shower, or using a heating pad for 20 minutes or less.
