Posting a throwback pic from a shoot for the Darkchild Remix of "Overprotected" (via YouTube), Applebaum claimed that he discovered Spears in her trailer moments after Timberlake had dumped her. "We sat on the floor of her trailer for a minute, talked it out, and then rallied," he wrote on Instagram. "I told her she should get out there & show Justin he made the biggest mistake of his life." Timberlake has yet to comment on this version of events, but did express his heartbreak over the breakup shortly after.

Speaking to The Telegraph in September 2002, Justin Timberlake described the breakup as "absolutely heartbreaking," explaining how he felt about his future prospects. "I can't just have meaningless relationships with women. I have to find miss right in order to have a relationship," he explained. "There's got to be that big moment when she comes along."
While Britney Spears may have had the filming process of "Overprotected" to help her deal with the pain, Timberlake took it one step further with the song "Cry Me A River" (via YouTube). Famously featuring a Spears lookalike (via Elle Australia), the video garnered controversy as it insinuated that the reason for their split was that Spears had cheated on him.
When asked by ABC's Diana Sawyer about the alleged incident (via YouTube), Spears said that "everyone has a side of their story to make them feel a certain way," adding that "I'm not technically saying he's wrong but I'm not technically saying he's right either."
Spears' memoir sheds light on her relationship and breakup with Timberlake
There are a multitude of surprising confessions in Britney Spears' memoir "The Woman in Me," including the revelation that Spears had an abortion at Justin Timberlake's behest. Spears also included her perspective on their breakup.
In the book, Spears said Timberlake cheated on her more than once during their relationship. "Because I was so infatuated and so in love, I let it go, even though the tabloids seemed determined to rub my face in it," the pop star wrote (via Katie Couric Media). She also confessed to cheating on Timberlake with Wade Robson saying, "We danced and danced. I made out with [Robson] that night." Although other sources have claimed her relationship with Robson was more serious than just that night, Spears has not spoken on those rumored assertions.
Spears wrote in "The Woman in Me" that, while Timberlake created his debut solo album, he started acting differently, which could have been what contributed to their breakup more so than Spears' affair. "When Justin began making ["Justified"]," Spears said, "he started being very standoffish with me. I think that was because he decided to use me as ammunition for his record, and so it made it awkward for him to be around me staring at him with all that affection and devotion."

Spears went on to say that the breakup really affected her, making her very upset for a long time. The singer said she was "devastated" about it and could not even speak. "I was comatose in Louisiana, and he was happily running around Hollywood," she revealed (via NY Post). However, Timberlake didn't completely cut ties after sending Spears the breakup text.
According to Billboard, Spears wrote in her memoir that Timberlake came to visit her in Louisiana post-breakup and brought a framed letter he'd written for her that ended with, "'I can't breathe without you.'" Spears added, "I still have it under my bed." She admitted that, despite Timberlake visiting her, she still did not talk. Many people speculate that her song "Everytime" is about their breakup and a response to his "Cry Me A River."
