Chad And Abigail From Days Of Our Lives: Relationship Timeline

"Days of Our Lives" viewers are all about the romance. Fans of the long-running NBC soap opera love to watch as Salem's couples take shape, some of which become super couples. Over the years, "DOOL" has had its fair share of super couples stemming back to the early days of Tom and Alice Horton and Doug and Julie Williams (via Soap Hub). Of course, some couples draw more fan interest than others such as Bo and Hope Brady, Steve and Kayla Johnson, and John Black and Marlena Evans.

Over the years, new generations of super couples were born, including Sami Brady and EJ DiMera and Will Horton and Sonny Kiriakis, the show's first-ever same-sex pairing. Fans love to watch the ups and downs of these couples as they dramatically try to fight through whatever obstacles that life has thrown at them.

One couple, in particular, Chad DiMera and Abigail Deveraux, have been through the wringer over the years, but still manage to find their way back to each other.

Early troubles for Chad and Abigail

While "Days of Our Lives" fans were very familiar with the character of Abigail Deveraux, the daughter of Jack Deveraux and Jennifer Horton, viewers were first introduced to Chad DiMera back in 2009, per Soaps.com. During that time, he was going by Chad Woods, as he was yet to find out that he was the son of Salem's biggest villain, Stefano DiMera. In 2011, Chad (then Casey Deidrick) and Abigail (then Kate Mansi) crossed paths and began their rocky relationship.

The couple's relationship was quickly filled with drama, as they set their sights on other love interests. For Chad, it was Melani Layton. Meanwhile, Abigail became obsessed with the much older Austin Reed. Chad eventually left Salem and Abby later dated Cameron Davis and even had a shocking affair with Chad's older brother EJ DiMera (then James Scott) while he was married to Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney).

By the time Chad returned to Salem (with actor Billy Flynn in the role), Abigail was already in a serious relationship with Ben Weston (Robert Scott Wilson).

Chad and Abigail fend off a killer and welcome their first child

"Days of Our Lives" viewers watched the intense romance between Abigail and Ben heat up, although she couldn't deny her feelings for Chad. The pair found themselves in bed together, but Abby continued to date Ben. After finding out that she was pregnant, things took a dangerous turn (via Soaps.com). Ben was revealed to be the Necktie Killer, a serial killer who had been terrorizing Salem and killing citizens such as Will Horton.

Ben ultimately had a mental breakdown and kidnapped a very pregnant Abigail. He held her hostage in a remote cabin, where she went into labor and delivered her son. It was Chad who came to Abby's rescue. Ben was eventually arrested and it was later revealed that Chad was the father of Abigail's baby, whom she named Thomas after great-grandfather, Tom Horton (via Soaps In Depth).

The baby brought Chad and Abby back together, and they tied the knot in 2016. However, they didn't live happily ever after. Sadly, the ordeal of being nearly killed by her boyfriend, Ben, sent Abby into a very bad headspace. She was committed to a mental hospital and later faked her own death so that Chad could move on from their relationship.

Abigail's split personality disorder leads to divorce

During the time that Chad believed that Abigail was dead, "Days of Our Lives" viewers watched him pair up with another character, Gabi Hernandez (Camila Banus). The two seemed to be moving along in their relationship when Abby returned to Salem with actress Marci Miller in the role (via Soaps.com). Chad was stunned, but of course, the two couldn't stay away from each other. Chad ultimately chose to be with Abby over Gabi, and the two reunited.

Trouble followed the fan-favorite couple as Abigail's former mental health issues returned. This time, she developed a split personality disorder and thought herself to be Gabi Hernandez among a few other personalities. During this time, Abby's alter-ego fell in love with Chad's brother, Stefan DiMera, and set the brothers against each other. Chad tried to re-institutionalize Abby, but she divorced him and later married Stefan so that she couldn't be placed back into a mental hospital. When Abigail found out that she was pregnant with her second child, Gabi, looking to get revenge, switched the paternity test results to make everyone believe Stefan was the father (via Soaps In Depth). After Abby gave birth to her daughter, Charlotte, it came to light that Chad was actually the father.

Sadly, that wasn't the end for Chabby's rocky romance.

Giving it another shot

Abigail and Chad eventually reunited again after their daughter, Charlotte, was kidnapped. Upon getting the little girl back, "Days of Our Lives" fans watched the couple get back together. They married for a third time in 2019 before leaving Salem (via Soaps.com). However, they later returned to their hometown. Shortly after their homecoming, Abby discovered that she had a half-sister named Gwen. The two women shared the same father, Jack Deveraux, and immediately clashed with one another. Gwen was out to destroy Abigail and even seduced Chad to get revenge. Gwen became pregnant and later had a miscarriage, which she blamed Abigail for.

Chad and Abby split due to his infidelity, and Abigail left town. She later returned in hopes of working on her marriage. The two decided to take things slow and try to resolve the issues that have plagued them in the past (via Soap Dirt). Of course, fans are now hoping that Chad and Abigail will finally get some peace and eventually live happily ever after as one of the best super couples in "DOOL" history.
